Inside the Book: "This is not a book for children.
It looks like a children's book. It has pictures. It has a saccharine-sweet title. The main characters are a little girl and her teddy bear. But all of that is just protective coloration. The truth is, this is a book for adults with a dark sense of humor and an appreciation of old-school faerie tales.
There are three separate endings to the book. Depending on where you stop, you are left with an entirely different story. One ending is sweet, another is horrible. The last one is the true ending, the one with teeth in it.
The Adventures of the Princess and Mr. Whiffle is a dark twist on the classic children's picture-book. I think of it as Calvin and Hobbes meets Coraline, with some Edward Gorey mixed in.
Simply said: This is not a book for children."
The Adventures of the Princess and Mr. Whiffle is a horror story wrapped up to look as if it is a children's book. The illustrations are outstanding and give you the impression that it would be safe for children. The book includes a interesting sticker that you could put on the cover that would "warn" children away from the book but it includes and expliteve so I will refrain from quoting it on this review but I will say that it made me chuckle.
The Princess is a carefree child who spends here days eating marzipan and taking her teddy bear, Mr. Whiffle, on many adventures that she imagines. However, under her bed lurks a creature that frightens her and Mr. Whiffle to no end.
The plot of The Adventures of the Princess and Mr. Whiffle is how the Princess spends her days in pure bliss and how her and Mr. Whiffle do their best to avoid stirring the creature under the bed. While the story is less then 100 pages when it is combined with Nate Taylor's amazing artwork the story comes alive.
The end of story leaves you with a twist which is why there is a parental warning on the book, but I will say that it was not as bad as I was lead to believe. The Adventure of the Princess and Mr. Whiffle is a quick read that will shed some light onto Patrick Rothfuss' strange yet humorous mind. It is a must have for any fan or collector of Rothfuss' work. While I am unsure how many, if any first editions remain for purchase at Subterranean Press the second printing will include Patrick's autograph. When I learned that little tidbit I was disappointed.
